IDEA 1Synopsis- A socially awkward boy who struggles daily with his anxiety finds release when he befriends a boy from his class who forces him to step out of his comfort zone and experience the things he is missing. Form- I want to shoot this in the form of a music video. I have always enjoyed watching stories in the form of a music video and i extremely keen to create one myself as i feel you are able use your interpretations from the lyrics to create a video for it. I also feel like the song explains what dialogue cant and explores deeper into the story and the feelings of the characters. Themes- Adventure, Mental Health, Friendship, Fear, Society, Overcoming Obstacles. INFLUENCES- |

Produce a project that contains video, audio and interactive elements, inspired by digital lives Pitch:
1- the form(s) of your products (Short film, music video, podcast, website/documentary)
I want to do my project in the style of an interactive short film where the viewer is able to choose what the character does next in the story. The short film will be videos on youtube and I'll use annotations to put in the choices the viewer can make and they will be links to the video that their decision leads too. There will also be audio elements to it which I can make.
2- the theme underpinning it
The theme is how social media effects your mental health
3- the target audience The target audience will be both genders around the age of 13-20 as I feel as though this age range is when people are most vulnerable and exposed to social media and are easily influenced by what they see and therefore this short film will be a lot more appealing and relatable to this age range
4- how viable it is (how many actors/extras, kit, locations do you need)
Location wise this short film will mainly be shot indoors as the short film will be focusing on social media and electronic devices that are used primarily in homes. There would have to be one main actor and then some extras that wouldn't necessarily have to act but rather be seen on social media accounts.
5- what has inspired you?
One of the main things that has inspired me was a recent video that had been uploaded to YouTube by a famous instagrammer, Essena o Neil, titled 'why I'm quitting social media' where she explained how she was influenced from a young age by social media and the huge impact it had on her and those around hers mental health.

Overall, I feel as though by analysing my film using Representation, Genre and Narrative it will definitely have a positive impact on my film making skills. I'll be able to create things that break and play with the different theories that i analysed so that i create something that will keep viewers surprised and entertained and not create something where the audience knows exactly whats coming next and whats expected of the characters and therefor isn't all that interested.
Ive also learnt different codes and conventions so i now know hot to avoid using them and how to mix them up. I've also learnt how to structure things like characters so that they have more depth to them and that they're more complex while also expanding my knowledge on how a film is put into a genre and if what it has to include if i want it to fit into a specific genre.
I think that Heathers was a good choice of film to choose to analyse as it has so much complexity to it that you can go into and has really helped me gather more experience and knowledge on representation, genres and narrative in films.

Out of the three analysis blogs I've done i feel as though i've found out some interesting things about my film and have gathered a deeper knowledge on narrative, genre and representation.
However, i feel as though applying narrative theory to my film was the most effective as it gave the most to talk about and i was able to pick apart my film as it really broke the conventions and theories in narrative. It also allowed me to get a clear insight into the film and the things i found out helped me a lot with the rest of the analysis blogs that i did on Heathers as i felt i had a better understanding of the film. I also found this analysis very interesting to do and i feel as though i'll be able to create things that break narrative theories and therefor are a lot more enjoyable and interesting to watch.
The analysis that i felt helped me the least was probably genre as there wasn't really that much to say other than that my film didn't fit into one genre, however i definitely enjoyed learning about different conventions used in genre and how my film plays with them and why it slips into other genres.

While Heathers includes lots of representations of different things, it as a film is one big representation of society. The film represents the social hierachy within a high school with the Heathers on top and the geeks on the bottom. In this blog i will be talking about a few topics and the way they are represented in the film.
In Heathers, Teenagers are represented as drug abusing, sex loving party animals who have one aim in life; to be popular. This is a very common convention used in films to represent teenagers and this is no exception in Heathers. The film represents all teenagers in certain stereotypes (popular girls, jocks, misfits, nerds/geeks, druggies) and heavily exaggerates them.
Heathers has been extremely influential in the way teenage females are represented In films as it exaggerated and made a mockery of the conventions and showed a deeper and more complex and less one dimensional. Teenage girls are represented as either being pretty/mean/dumb or unpopular/nice/intelligent without an in-between, however in Heathers there is an inbetween; Veronica.
The main setting in Heathers is the school they go to. The school is represented as being every school there is with the same social hierarchy. JD says about him going to loads of different high schools and them always having the same students no matter where he goes. The school is almost represented as some sort of teenage battlefield where it's popular vs unpopular and in terms of the film it is quite literally a fight to the death.
In Heathers there is the theme of the family having failed the Teenager. Veronicas parents never do anything to support or guide Veronica even when JD tells them that she is going to commit suicide, Her mothers solution is to bring her a snack. JD's mother committed suicide in front of him when he was child and his father is constantly moving him around from school to school with no regard for the damage it has on his son. All of the Heathers/Jocks parents are presented as being very wealthy and upper class. Because of this, it has a huge impact on the way the characters behave and act. Their parents never really payed any of them much attention and therefor this causes them to act out and want to gain attention and popularity from their peers.
The older generation (parents/teachers etc;) are presented as being very ignorant of any situations that occur in the film (mainly the student suicides) and focus mainly on how they can pay respect/tribute to the dead teens after they've died and don't try and actually do anything about the suicides like trying to stop them. When the teacher actually does say something to the teenagers about not commiting suicide its probably just as effective as the 'teenage suicide (don't do it)' song that JD mocks.

Laura Mulvey studied many films and found that regardless of the type/genre of the film she argued that the female characters are porttrayed as sexual objects for men to desire, she named this The Male Gaze. Heathers includes many sexualised comments made by the male characters towards the female characters. However, the female characters are never shot in a sexualised way to please male viewers -as if they were the camera- but throughout the entire film the value of the female characters lie in their physical appearance.
The Bechdel test is a test used to indicate whether or not gender inequality and sexism is present in a film. The test looks out for 3 things, whether there are at least 2 women present in the film, whether they talk to each other at some point, and whether they talk to each other about something other than men.
Heathers passes this test as it includes a lot more than 2 female characters, they all have conversations either with each other or with the main characters Veronica and they often talk about things other than male characters.

What primary/secondary research have you done so far?
I have done online surveys and focus groups to find out what people think of my Idents and to get feedback and critisiscm so i know how to improve my Ident and what is good about it. We also had the director Otto Batthurst come in and give us a talk and answer any questions we had which gave us an insight into the media industry and what to expect.
The secondary research I did was on job roles, careers and further training. I researched these three things on a website that gave me lots of different information on it. This information was fast and easy to get an therefor was an effective way of doing research.

which have you found most useful and why?
Personally i found primary research most useful as i could put in the questions that i wanted to know and tailor the answers i wanted to get (multiple answer/yes or no answers) so i could get the exact data that i wanted and needed which i found better than using someone else's data that might not exactly fit what i wanted to find out.
What are the cons/pros of both?
Primary- Pros;
- You can tailor the question5s to what you need to find out
- You can choose what form of survey you use (face to face, online, etc;)
-Up to date information
cons;
- Trying to get large scale results can be very time consuming and hard to do
- The results could be biased

Secondary- Pros;
- it is easily found on places such as the internet
- You can find a large range of results quickly
- Its (usually) free
- Usually based on actual sales figures
Cons;
- It may not include all of the information that you initially wanted to find out
- The data that you find may be incorrect
- Data may be out of date and so invalid
Personally i think that out of the three contexts that i analyzed (Historical, Cultural and Social) all play a big part and heavily influence my chosen film Heathers.
In each type of context there is something that affects the way the film was made however the one that i think has the most influence on the film and that stands out amongst the other contexts is Social context. The whole meaning behind the film Heathers is all to do with society and how it affects everyone and how they behave/act, which is why its very easily the most important and effective context.

How does context affect me?
Context affects me as it influences my opinions and views on certain things, this is mainly done by Historical context as this would have affected both the society and culture I've been brought up in and influenced the people i knows views. For example if I'm watching a film based in a certain time period i will form a personal judgment on what i think the film we be about/ what will be included in it based on what i know about the social, historical and cultural context of where and when it is set.
Heathers is a film that could most definitely never be made in the world we live in today as it would be deemed extremely offensive.
Historical- period of time it is set/made (what was in the news)
Heathers was made in 1988 and set and released in 1989. It was set in Ohio in America. In 1989 there were lots of stories surrounding the news, one of the main ones was that the cold war finally ended after 45 years and the Berlin wall was demolished. Another event that occurred that had a huge effect on the world was that Denmark became the first country to legalize same sex unions followed by Norway. Only recently have all states of America legalized same sex marriage
SOCIAL- society in which it is set/ made (way people live and interact)
Denmark became the first country in the world to legalise same sex unions - In Heathers, Veronica and JD use peoples homophobic views to humiliate Ram and Kurt when they say they killed themselves in a 'repressed, homosexual, suicide pact'. They do this as in 1989 same sex marriage was illegal in almost all countries and was still seen as a 'sin' and being called homosexual was deemed offensive.
There was still a huge divide in the 'rich/poor' scheme of things, in Heathers those who had money were instantly put into the popular group and those who didn't have the same amount of money were instantly categorized into the unpopular category. Like i said in an earlier blog, Heathers is a good representation of society as it shows the social hierarchy in a simple way. The richer people would look down on the poorer people as they were at the top of the hierarchy and the poor at the bottom, this idea of the social hierarchy is the reason that the Heathers and the jocks were the way they were and why Veronica and JD decided to knock them down.

CULTURAL- the way people live & the things people do (arts + culture + mannerisms + dominant values etc)
In 1989 65% of Americans said that they believed in a religion and 34% saying that they didn't, many younger people tended to not be religious while older generations had grown up with a very religious society. This idea of younger people being atheists links into Heathers as the subject of religion is thrown around a lot and almost mocked by JD as he says 'our love is god'.

Final reflection and evaluation of skills and professional experience
2. What areas of media practice across the term have you found a challenge, why do you think you’ve found these areas challenging and what do you need to do to continue to improve your skills and understanding? I think i found using different softwares a challenge as the majority of them i had never used before or only had brief knowledge on and so i found them hard to use, however after a while of using them and being told how to do certain things i had more experience using them. To improve in these softwares i need to take it upon myself to download them at home and to gain knowledge and experience by using it and looking at tutorials that show me how to do different things on it.
3. From your research and the talks and focus on professional practice, what skills and qualities do you feel are essential to enable you to make progress towards your career goal? What do you need to do in order to develop these and how can you be supported in this? Im still not 100% sure what i want to do after I've completed this course and what aspect of media i want to go into so i need to make sure that I'm taking it into my own hands and doing research at home and experimenting with the things I'm learning in college so that i gain a stronger understanding of what i enjoy the most and therefor what i want to go into.

Why do we need risk ASSESSMENTS?
Risk assessments are an important element in ensuring that the set can be safely used and that the crew arent in any danger while filming. It is also breaking the law if a risk assessment is not carried out and the company can be sued.
focus group
In a group of 5 we watched and discussed each others idents giving positives and negatives.
One of my negatives was that the cats eye closes to slowly, another was that having both the black background and the black cat made it too dark and hard to determine where the cat was.
Alfie said that he liked the contrast of the white text on the black background as it made the text stand out effectively and made it memorable.
A positive i got was that they liked the art style of it because it made it memorable and therefor it was effective and visually pleasing.

survey
As the results show, my Ident was quite successful but could also use some improvements.
2 people said that they didn't find the Ident to be visually appealing, taking this and my focus group feedback into consideration i believe that not everyone finds the black on black scheme to be very appealing and probably find it quite bland.

evaluation
As it was my first time using the After Effect software I'm quite pleased with my ident and how it turned out, however i know that it also needs quite a bit of work to get to a more professional standard. I could get it to this standard by improving on After Effect and Photoshop so its of a higher standard.
Using all of this information that i got from the survey i could improve my ident in a number of ways. Firstly i would change some of the black for a different colour to make my Ident more visually appealing and therefor more effective. In terms of improving the animation in my ident a problem someone picked up was that when the cat blinks its eyelid doesn't slide up the same direction it slides down. Another is that the cat blinks to slowly, these are both easily fixable things that i can do to improve my ident.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to impress employers straight away and start to build up contacts in the creative industry to help you in the future. They also provide paid work and give you the skills and experience employers will look for You may even be offered a job with the employer after you finish your apprenticeships. You can do 3 different levels of apprenticeships which are equivilent to different qualifications:
Level 2: equivalent to GCSEs, A* to C grades or Scottish National 5
Level 3: equivalent to A-Levels or Scottish Highers
Level 4: equivalent to HNDs or foundation degrees
Level 2: equivalent to GCSEs, A* to C grades or Scottish National 5
Level 3: equivalent to A-Levels or Scottish Highers
Level 4: equivalent to HNDs or foundation degrees
degree course
In degree courses you receive a qualification by either doing hands on experience & building skills you'll need to work in the industry or you build up your knowledge by studying, this is an easier way into the industry than doing an apprenticeship however in apprenticeships you'll constantly be surrounded by new opportunities to learn how things work.
Trainee placements
To get a trainee placement you will first need some experience in the industry as this option is more aimed at those who know what part of the industry they want to get into or be trained in. When you decide what you want to work as (An editor for an example) you're added to a data base where employers can search for trainees to hire and if you are eligible you will be picked to start a training plan.
I think that things should be censored based on who the audience is and whether or not the content is deemed offensive towards them. Censorship can most definitely limit what you as a film maker are able to create and what you are able to get across based on your demographic, but it also ensures that people of certain ages aren't exposed to things that could heavily influence them.
However if the goverment are able to censor everything they want then the public will have no say on what they can or cannot be exposed to and can technically have important events around the world or in their country hidden from them. An example of a country that strongly uses censorship is in North Korea. In North Korea they aren't allowed to report anything negative on Kim Jong Un as they want the public to see him as some sort of a God and do this by controlling what they know about him and what they hear about him.
I personally think that the freedom of speech is something that someone can't deny a person and that if someone thinks they have the right to censor what someone has said this indicates that the point of view that the censor has is superior and that this is the 'right' point of view. I think that people should have the right to voice their opinions even if it offends people and the freedom of speech shouldn't be censored as the person must deal with the consequences of what they say and others can choose to ignore this persons opinion or in some cases take it on board.
However there are some sorts of censorship that are for the greater good and freedom of speech has its limits and a person should know when self censorship should be used.

How would you use research on your film? And how?
i would use the research to see how much it would cost for advertising partnerships and hiring experts. i will also research viability of my film to find out how much money i will be spending and this will then help me to keep under my budget so i don't spend way more than i have.

What form of research do you think is most important + why?
i think that the most important form of research is market research because it gathers information about the target audiences through statistics to support decision making or to give an insight on decisions. Without this form of research the demographic isn't really that involved and it isn't really taken into much consideration.
